Storage Guide: What Goes In, What Doesn't, and Which Size?

Storable items, prohibited goods, choosing a unit size and preparation steps.

Storage is a practical way to lighten the load at home during the gap between moves, renovations, assignments abroad or downsizing. But not every item can be stored equally well in every unit. Here is what you need to know when choosing a unit and preparing belongings.

Which items can be stored?

Furniture, white goods, books, clothes, stationery archives, bicycles, sports equipment and commercial stock keep without trouble. For wooden furniture and electronics prefer the temperature and humidity-controlled (climate-controlled) section, because sudden humidity changes can warp wood and corrode electronics.

Items not accepted

  • Flammable, combustible and explosive substances: paint thinners, gas cylinders, fuel.
  • Live plants, animals and perishable food.
  • Weapons, drugs and illegal substances.
  • Cash, jewellery and valuable documents; do not put these in storage.

How to choose a unit size

As a rule of thumb: a studio needs 4 – 6 m³, a one-bedroom about 9 m³, a two-bedroom about 14 m³, a three-bedroom about 20 m³ and a four-bedroom about 28 m³. Stacking items can reduce the volume by 20%, but access becomes harder. Place items you will need often near the door.

Preparing for storage

  1. Empty and dry the fridge and washing machine and leave the doors ajar to prevent mould.
  2. Disassemble furniture if possible; bag the parts and stick them on the pieces.
  3. Wrap mattresses, sofas and rugs in a breathable cover; plastic should be used only for short periods.
  4. Keep boxes at least 10 cm off the floor, on pallets or shelves.
  5. Prepare a contents list and leave a copy in the unit.

Questions to ask when choosing a warehouse

  • Does the facility have 24/7 cameras, alarm and fire detection?
  • Is there insurance cover for contents inside the unit, and what is the limit?
  • What range are humidity and temperature kept in, and is there regular pest control?
  • What are the access hours and is an appointment required?
  • Is a collect-from-home and place-in-storage service offered?

Cost and period

As of 2026, climate-controlled units cost around 750 TRY a month for 2 m³ and about 4,400 TRY for 18 m³. Discounts for contracts of six months or more are common. Always check the minimum term, access hours, notice period and warehouse insurance limit in the contract.
