Moving Insurance and Damage Claims: A Step-by-Step Guide

What to do at delivery and afterwards if damage occurs during a move.

Damage to an item during transport is rare but possible. What matters is knowing in advance what rights you have and how to manage the process. The steps below save time when damage occurs.

Read the contract and policy first

The moving contract states the liability limit, the damage notification period and excluded items. Under the Turkish Commercial Code, the carrier is responsible for damage occurring between taking over and delivering the goods, but statutory limits and contract terms apply. A standard liability policy mostly covers loss caused by the carrier's fault.

What to do at delivery

  1. Count boxes and furniture as they come off the truck and compare them with the inventory list.
  2. Photograph any dents, tears or wetness on outer packaging.
  3. Have visible damage written on the delivery report and signed by both sides.
  4. A note that goods were "accepted without inspection" can affect your rights; where possible, open and check important boxes.

Damage noticed later

Breakage inside boxes is often discovered afterwards. The contract usually includes a notification period such as seven days; give written notice (email or registered letter) within it. Attach photos, the item name, its estimated value and the purchase invoice if available.

Which damage is not covered?

  • Events not caused by the carrier's fault (force majeure such as natural disaster, war or strikes).
  • Items packed by the customer where the contract does not transfer damage liability.
  • Old scratches, stains or manufacturing defects photographed at the survey.
  • Cash, jewellery and valuable documents.

When is an extra (all-risk) policy worthwhile?

If you have antiques, artworks, a piano, high-value electronics or collectibles, an extra policy issued on the declared value gives cover beyond the standard limit. The premium is about 0.2% – 0.4% of the declared value. A photographic condition report is prepared before the policy.

Ways to prevent damage

  • Have existing scratches and defects photographed at the survey so there is no argument after the move.
  • Archive the serial number, invoice and photo of valuable items beforehand.
  • In buildings without elevators or with narrow entrances, settle before the move whether a mobile lift is needed.
  • Check the damage notification period and maximum compensation limit in the contract.

If there is a dispute

If you are not satisfied with the company's reply, you can apply as a consumer to the Consumer Arbitration Committee or the Consumer Court; application limits are updated every year. This text is for information and is not legal advice.
