From kitchen to bedroom, fragile items to electronics: tips on boxes, labels and packaging.
Most moving damage comes from packaging. With the right materials and placement you can cut breakage risk considerably. Here are our room-by-room packing tips.
Kitchen
- Pack plates upright with paper between them; stacking them flat increases breakage.
- Wrap glasses one by one in paper and carry them in partitioned boxes.
- Cover knives and sharp tools with cardboard.
- Eat up your food; open food, cooking oil and spillable products are not moved.
Bedroom and wardrobe
- Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes; they remove folding and ironing problems.
- Duvets and pillows shrink to a third of their volume in vacuum bags.
- Mattresses and bases are wrapped in stretch film and given a protective cover.
Lounge and study
- Put books in small boxes; weight above 30 kg in a large box can tear it.
- Move televisions and monitors in their original boxes, or with foam protectors if not available.
- Label electronics cables with coloured tape and photograph the connections.
- Carry paintings and mirrors upright with corner guards and cardboard frames, never flat.
Bathroom and children's room
- Tape the lids of liquid products and bag them.
- Sort toys by category and carry them in clear boxes; keep first-day essentials in a separate box.
Labelling system
Write room, contents and number on each box, and stick labels on the sides too, because when boxes are stacked only the sides are visible. You can mark fragile boxes red and first-to-open boxes green.
Typical material list for a three-bedroom flat
- 40-50 medium boxes and 10-15 small book boxes
- 4-6 wardrobe boxes and 3 painting/mirror crates
- 6-8 rolls of bubble wrap, 4 rolls of stretch film and 3 rolls of box tape
- Furniture blankets and corner guard sets
Do a final check the day before: note the number of boxes, set aside your valuables bag and prepare a first-day box you can reach easily on moving day (chargers, cleaning supplies, tea and coffee set, medicines).
Pack yourself or leave it to the crew?
If you pack yourself, material costs are low but the time and damage risk are yours. Professional packing costs 3,400 – 4,500 TRY on average for a three-bedroom flat, and insurance cover is at its widest for items packed by the crew. As a middle path, pack everyday items yourself and leave fragile and valuable ones to the crew.
